Salt is used in a wide range of chemical processes including the chlor alkali process, soda ash production, water softening, metallurgical processing, soap and detergent manufacturing and oil & gas drilling.

Local salt often contains high levels of hardness minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, which can interfere with these processes. For electrochemical processes in particular, local salt with high hardness can introduce calcium and magnesium ions, leading to electrode scaling, reduced conductivity, and inefficiencies in reactions.

This forces many companies to source the required high-quality salt from overseas suppliers resulting in increased costs,

increased risks of supply chain disruptions, currency fluctuations, quality/consistency issues, dependency on foreign markets, and an increased carbon footprint.
